Graduate Visa

How long does a Graduate visa last?

Right now the Graduate route gives most graduates two years to live and work in the UK without a sponsor, and three years for PhD holders. It cannot be extended. One change matters for your timing: for applications made on or after 1 January 2027, the grant drops to 18 months for non-PhD graduates. Apply on or before 31 December 2026 and the full two years still stands. PhD graduates keep three years under both.

Why planning ahead matters

Because the route cannot be extended, the most important work is often what follows it, usually a switch to the Skilled Worker visa. That means understanding the salary threshold, occupation code and sponsor licence requirements well before the Graduate visa expires, so there is no gap in status. Leaving it late is the most common way graduates lose their place in the UK.
