Business Immigration – Skilled Worker
The Skilled Worker Route Explained
The Skilled Worker route allows UK employers to sponsor overseas nationals to work in eligible roles. Applications are assessed against role eligibility, skill level, and salary thresholds.
Applications may arise in several contexts, including initial entry clearance, switching from another immigration route, extensions, or changes of employment. Issues can arise where job descriptions, salary structure, employment history, or previous immigration matters are unclear or disputed.
The Skilled Worker route is one of the most commonly used sponsored immigration routes in the UK, but it is also one of the most technically demanding. Salary thresholds, occupation codes, and eligibility criteria are subject to regular change. Both employers and workers can find themselves in difficulty where applications are not carefully prepared from the outset. Getting the foundations right at the application stage significantly reduces the risk of refusal, curtailment, or compliance issues later.
Support for Applications, Extensions, and Challenges
ZH Law advises individuals and employers on Skilled Worker applications, extensions, dependent applications, and settlement planning. We also advise on refusals, curtailment, and challenges where Skilled Worker leave is refused or withdrawn.
With over 27 years of experience, we work directly with clients through the Direct Access scheme, so there is no need to engage a solicitor first.
We advise on all stages of the Skilled Worker route. For employers, this includes assessing role eligibility, advising on salary requirements, and preparing strong applications that address Home Office concerns. For workers, we provide guidance on switching routes, visa extensions, bringing dependants, and progression to settlement.
Where applications are refused or leave is curtailed, we act quickly to advise on options and protect clients’ immigration status within strict deadlines.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the salary threshold for a Skilled Worker visa?
The general threshold for most roles is £41,700 per year as of 22 July 2025. Lower thresholds apply for shortage occupations, new entrants, and specific sectors including health and education. ZH Law advises on the correct threshold for your specific occupation code and circumstances.
2. How long does a Skilled Worker visa application take?
Applications made outside the UK are typically decided within around 3 weeks. Applications made inside the UK usually take up to 8 weeks under standard processing.
3. Can I change employers on a Skilled Worker visa?
Yes. However, your new employer must hold a valid sponsor licence and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship. You must also apply to update your visa before starting the new role. Working without approval may breach your visa conditions.
4. What happens if my Skilled Worker visa application is refused?
Depending on the grounds, options may include administrative review, a fresh application, or an appeal. Time limits apply. Contact ZH Law as early as possible to discuss the options available to you.

We cannot thank the team at ZH Law enough for the outstanding service we received, especially from Mr Mufaddal Borhany and Mr Zainul Jafferji. From the very beginning, they went above and beyond to help us resolve an issue we had with our daughter’s passport. Mufaddal was always available whenever we messaged or called, responding quickly - no query was ever too small, and every concern was handled with patience, professionalism, and genuine care. He was very thorough especially with writing a detailed letter to HM Passport Office on our behalf, which ultimately helped our case succeed and allowed us to obtain the outcome we needed. We thoroughly recommend their services.Posted on Google Yusuf AbdulaliTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Cannot recommend ZH Law highly enough.
